Growth of the exhibition centre
2008: integration of Sala Maggiore (former Galleria d'Arte Moderna) with Palazzo della Cultura e dei Congressi.
The new Sala Maggiore was previously the site of Bologna's Galleria d'Arte Moderna, designed by Leone Pancaldi in the 1970s.
With three multi-purpose, modular areas, it can hold up to 4000 people.
With ample spaces, it provides an architecturally prestigious setting for all types of events, such as exhibitions, cocktail parties, and large gala dinners, in addition to its customary use as a conference hall.
2008: the new Halls 14 and 15 and the new Michelino car park
The new halls rise to the northwest of the Centre, giving it the dimensions of an average exhibition centre (over 60,000 square metres).
They are connected to Halls 19-20 and 16-18 to form a single, large exhibition space. Moreover, this connection allows use of the spaces and services already offered in Halls 16-18: catering and multi-purpose area for offices and/or conferences. One of the main design criteria, of the architect Cerri, was minimising structural obstacles and lowered zones, a goal that characterises the exhibition spaces.
The new, multi-level car park for the Bologna Exhibition Centre is contained in a building designed as a combination of two separate structures on 5 levels, linked by two access ramps.
With state-of-the-art systems for vehicle entrance and exit and for parking, the new car park has a pedestrian arcade on the ground floor with various services for visitors (automatic cash dispenser, bar, etc.) and is directly connected to the Exhibition Centre's entrance. The entire complex is designed with perfect visual and spatial harmony with surrounding buildings.
2004: Halls 16 and 18
The 2-level Hall 16/18, designed by Studio Cerri, brought an additional 20,000 square metres of exhibition space and 8,000 square metres for services (offices, conference rooms, restaurants). This modern structure has an independent entrance for maximum flexibility of use with or without other halls, to which it is connected with raised walkways. In addition, it has rooftop parking and a heliport.
2004: connection of Halls 21 and 22
After the first mobile walkways, an innovative gallery connecting Halls 21, 22, 23, and 24 creates a new exhibition space: just two enormous Halls (21 and 22), totally upgraded architecturally and technologically. The structure is characterised by a soft colour scheme that harmonises all of the spaces and highlights the red used for signs and for public service areas.
Buildings are linked to adjacent halls (19-20 and 16-18) by mobile walkways, maintaining the Bologna Exhibition Centre's strong architectural connotation.
1998: Halls 19 and 20
HALL 19/20 has a gross surface area of 33,000 square metres and is located in the west zone of the Centre, next to the Palazzo della Cultura e dei Congressi. It was the first structure in Leonardo Benevolo's new design for the Bologna Exhibition Centre, aimed at rationalising and modernising the complex in conformity to its overall architectural identity.
The weight-bearing structures are designed by Massimo Majowiecki; the ones supporting the floors adopt innovative solutions and constitute the architectural theme that defines the work as a whole. Plants and systems are designed for the specific needs of trade exhibitions and offer exhibitors the finest possible utilities.
Two innovative spans characterise the exhibition space and help guide visitors with a pyramidal dome that reaches a height of 33 metres.
The first mobile walkway linking the Piazza Costituzione entrance and Hall 19-20 upgrades the northwest area of the Centre. This new mechanised system improves traffic and makes it easier to move from one point to another.
