Shopping
There is not much "self-service" in Bologna and in clothing stores you should let the "titolare" or "commessa" help you.
Although there are numerous large supermarkets in the city, food shopping at small grocers or in the open-air market is still part of the daily ritual for many Italians.
Many shops are closed on Sundays and Thursday afternoons. Although department stores and clothing shops may be open, most small retail shops are closed on these days.
Hairdressers, barber shops, and beauticians are closed on Mondays.
The stands at the Piazza Aldrovandi market are always open at lunchtime, and Plenty Market supermarkets (small stores in the historical centre) are also open Sunday mornings from 9 AM to 1 PM.
Clothing and footwear
Via D'Azeglio has many stores with clothes for adults and children.
Top designer labels are found in Galleria Cavour and via Farini.
There are many lingerie, footwear, and accessory shops under the Pavaglione portico on via dell'Archiginnasio.
Trendy clothing can be found on via S. Felice, while shops with low-cost clothing are located on via Indipendenza and via Rizzoli.
"La piazzola," Bologna's largest open-air market, is open on Friday and Saturday in Piazza VIII Agosto and the Montagnola Park. Here you can find just about everything, from clothing to accessories, footwear, plants, and housewear.
The Montagnola has used and vintage clothes, old cashmere, jeans and ethnic clothing.
Remember to haggle over prices, especially if you're buying several items.
